Two UPDF activists held on charge of extortion
Two activists of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) were arrested by a joint force yesterday on charge of illegal toll collection.
The arrestees are Miku Chakma, 29, son of late Dindulal Chakma of Amtali (Pulin Headmanpara) under Dighinala upazila and Rupom Chakma, 27, son of Muktalal Chakma of Rangapani village under Sadar upazila in Rangamati district.
Dighinala police said, acting on a tip-off, the joint force raided the residence of Jyotirmoy Chakma at Keyangat village under Dighinala upazila and arrested them along with 10 subscription books and 50 national ID cards of indigenous people.
Contacted, assistant superintendent of police Mohammad Maksuder Rahman said, the two were being interrogated to find out why they have kept the ID cards. The ID card holders are indigenous people of Bagaichhari upazila in Rangamati district, he said.
However, UPDF district unit coordinator Ujjal Smrity Chakma denied the allegation of toll collection and said the two are innocent and victims of a 'dirty game'.
