12 killed, 75 injured in road accidents
At least 12 people were killed and 75 others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Netrakona, Jessore and Sirajganj yesterday and on Saturday night.
Staff correspondent adds: A truck helper was killed and its driver injured when a speedy passenger bus hit them from behind at Mohammadpur embankment in the city early hours yesterday.
The dead was identified as Mohammad Russel, 22 while the locals rushed driver Golam Mostofa to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Police said a speeding passenger bus hit Russel and Mostofa while they were talking to each other, keeping the truck beside the road at around 430am, leaving Russel dead on the spot dead.
Locals seized the bus and handed over bus driver Rabbi to the police.
Our correspondent from Mymensingh reports: At least three people were killed and four others injured in a road accident on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Bharaduba in Bhaluka Upazila yesterday.
The victims were identified as Ashraful, 42, son of Idris Ali of village Satkani in Trishal, Sujan, 42, son of Zohur Ali, of village Rampur and Shaheed, son of Abdul Awal of village Niguari in Bhaluka.
Police said the accident took place when a Mymensingh-bound truck from Dhaka skidded off the road when it hit seven rickshaws standing beside the road at Bharaduba and fell into a roadside ditch, leaving three people dead on the spot. Of the dead, two are rickshawpullers and a pedestrian.
The injured were rushed to Bhaluka Upazila Health Complex. Police seized the truck and arrested its driver.
The bodies were sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) morgue for autopsy. A case was lodged in this connection.
Our correspondent from Netrakona adds: One person was killed and 40 others injured in separate road accidents in Netrakona on Saturday night and yesterday.
One person was killed and 15 others were injured in a road accident on Durgapur-Netrakona road accident at Jaria Bazar under Purbadhala upazila on Saturday night.
Police said the accident occurred when a Durgapur-bound passenger bus from Netrakona turned upside down at Jaria Bazar as its driver lost his control over the steering, leaving one person dead and 15 others injured.
The dead was identified as Alas Mia, 12, son of Amir Hossen of village Natorkona under Purbadhala upazila. Of the injured, Ahamed Hossen, Nabin Kha, Samir Chawdhury, Karimunnasa and Janu Mia, 7, were rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in critical condition. The others were admitted to Purbadhala Upazila Health Complex.
Meanwhile, 25 people were injured in another road accident on Netrakona-Mohonganj road at Bangla under Netrakona Sadar upazila yesterday.
Police said the accident occurred when a Netrakona-bound passenger bus from Mohonganj fell into a roadside ditch at Bangla as its driver lost his control over the steering, leaving 25 people injured.
Of the injured, Abdul Khalek, 62, Abdur Rahim, 53, Salamon Bibi, 56, Abdus Salam, 35, Salim Mia, 54, and Atiqur Rahman, 12, were sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Others were admitted to Netrakona Sadar Hospital.
UNB from Jessore adds: At least five people were killed and 30 others injured when a bus fell into a roadside ditch at Ghadkhali in Jhikargaccha upazila on Saturday night.
Former UP member Shariful Islam of Krishnagar, Imroj, Mintoo, Abbas and an unidentified woman aged about 30 died in the accident.
Police said a Jessore-bound bus from Benapole rammed into a roadside tree and swerved off the road into a ditch as the driver lost his control over the steering at about 9:00pm, leaving two dead on the spot and three on way to Jessore General Hospital.
Condition of 12 others admitted to the hospital was stated to be “critical”.
Another report from Sirajganj said a middle-aged woman and her minor granddaughter were killed in a road accident on Dhaka-Bogra highway at Gulka in Royganj upazila yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Bishnu Rani, 55, and Shikha Rani, 10, of Talta village of Sherpur upazila in Bogra.
Police and witnesses said Bishnu and Shikha died on the spot as a Dhaka-bound bus ran over them while crossing the road at about 3:30pm.
Police sent the bodies to hospital morgue.
