13 species of animal now extinct
Climate change and man-made adverse environment have so far caused extinction of 13 species of animals and endangered 800 other species in Bangladesh.
Wildlife Trust of Bangladesh (WTB) sources said the extinct animals include peacock, crocodile, wolf, wild buffalo, sambar (neelgai) and rhinoceros.
Talking to the news agency, WTB Chief Executive Officer Prof Anwarul Islam said half of the country's 1,600 species are endangered.
Stressing the need for protection of biodiversity, he said political as well as social commitment are a must in this connection, otherwise 150 more species will become extinct gradually.
The endangered species include 50 species of fish, 41 species of mammal, eight species of amphibian and 58 species of reptiles.
At present, the country has 708 species of fish, 22 species of amphibians, 126 species of reptiles, 528 species of birds, 113 species of mammals and 3,006 species of algae.
