Workshop on carbon financing begins
A two-day workshop titled 'Global Climate Change and Carbon Financing: Opportunities for Bangladesh' opened in the city yesterday.
The participants will explore opportunities for carbon financing in Bangladesh as means to cut carbon emissions, increase adaptation and improve land use in the way of poverty alleviation and conservation of biodiversity, said a press release.
The workshop has been organised under the USAID's Integrated Protected Area Co-management (IPAC) Project and the United States Forest Service in partnership with the Bangladesh Government, Jahangirnagar University and Independent University of Bangladesh as part of a capacity building effort.
US Ambassador to Bangladesh James F Moriarty and State Minister for Environment and Forests Dr Hasan Mahmud were present at the inaugural session.
The US Government has provided more than $5 billion in assistance to Bangladesh since 1971.
In 2009, the US assistance will stand at about $180 million.
