AL leader held on charge of extortion

Police on Tuesday arrested Panna Sheikh, youth and sports secretary of ruling Awami League's Kotalipara unit.

Police arrested Panna on charge of demanding Tk one lakh as illegal toll from Goura Chandra Das of Kajulia village in neighbouring Gopalganj Sadar upazila.
Goura alleged he was compelled to sell his dwelling house to avoid further torture by Panna Sheikh and buy land elsewhere. At this, Panna and his cohorts got infuriated and demanded Tk 1lakh as illegal toll.
As he could not meet the demand, Panna and his accomplices, on several occasions, harassed and beat Goura, according to a case filed with Gopalganj Sadar police station in this connection. Police later arrested the AL leader.
Officer in-charge (OC) of Gopalganj Sadar police station Shahidul Islam said, they found the allegation true during investigation and arrested him. Panna was sent to jail hajat in the afternoon.
