Govt alerts law enforcers to violation of conditions
The cabinet committee on law and order yesterday instructed the law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant so that none can violate the conditions for indoor politics which it said could pose a threat to law and order.
It also asked the law enforcers to monitor prices of essentials.
The committee that met yesterday suggested reduction of tariff on imported essentials to control their price hike.
The meeting expressed satisfaction over the law and order now despite the increase in filing criminal cases.
Chaired by Law and Information adviser Mainul Hosein the meeting was attended by Education Adviser Ayub Quadri, and heads of different government agencies and organisations concerned. The home secretary later briefed reporters about the meeting.
The cabinet body gave permission to hold elections of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) and Association of Film Artistes.
It instructed the authorities to cancel mobile phone SIM cards taken against fake names and addresses, and used for extortion and giving threats.
At the briefing, Home Secretary Abdul Karim said the use of mobile phones for extortion and giving threats is on the rise. Law enforces are looking into call lists of mobile phones to detect the extortionists and other miscreants, he mentioned.
"After getting specific evidence, law enforcement agencies will request Bangladesh Telecom Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to cancel SIM cards taken against fake names and addresses and used in extortion," he added.
On the increase in filing criminal cases, the home secretary said, “It is happening because the government is not suppressing anything at present. All police stations are now taking cases whenever victims are going to file those."
Asked about Wednesday's incident involving two BNP factions near the grave of the founder of the party late president Ziaur Rahman, he said it was an isolated incident.
Top leaders of Saifur-led BNP faced the wrath of Khaleda Zia loyalists while Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, member of the party standing committee, was assaulted in the incident.
The other leaders who were harassed by pro-Khaleda activists are acting BNP chief Saifur Rahman, Dhaka Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka and party chairperson's adviser Maj Gen (retd) ZA Khan.
Five people including a policeman were injured as the law enforcers clubbed BNP activists several times to maintain order at the entrance to the grave of Zia.
