UNHCR assures aid for infrastructure dev
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has assured Bangladesh of providing financial assistance for infrastructure development as the refugees have been using the country's limited resources.
"The UNCHR wants to give about Tk 1.5 crore to develop schools and colleges in the region of Rohingya camps," Food and Disaster Management Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque said after a meeting with UNCHR Representative Saber Azam at the minister's office yesterday.
Razzaque said the government sought for permanent settlement of the Rohingya problem. So, they are not interested to include a list of unregistered Rohingyas.
He said the government would stress bilateral discussion with Myanmar to resolve the problem as the Myanmar government denied basic rights of the Rohingya refugees. Many of them came back to Bangladesh after they were repatriated.
The minister also sought assistance from the international community to resolve the problem by exerting pressure on the Myanmar government so that the refugees can return to their homes.
Presently 24,000 registered Rohingyas are staying in two camps and many unregistered Rohingyas remain outside the camps in Bangladesh.
