DU student 'murdered'
A Dhaka University student was killed allegedly by her husband in the city's Mirpur on Saturday while three others died in separate incidents during the Sunday-Tuesday Eid holidays.
Police took DU student Mafruda Huq Sutopa's husband Imrul Sadat alias Abeer, an official of Al-Arafah Islami Bank Ltd, on a three-day remand for questioning.
Sutopa was a master's examinee in mass communication and journalism department and resided at her Mirpur-2 residence with her husband.
Mirpur police said they recovered the body of Sutopa around 9:00pm on Saturday from the emergency of National Heart Foundation Hospital at Mirpur where her husband took her for admission.
They arrested Abeer after Sutopa's brother Mohammad Amin filed a murder case against Abeer and his parents.
Sutopa's family members said she got married with Abeer 16 months ago.
Her brother-in-law Emdadul Huq told The Daily Star that her neighbours informed them Saturday night that she was hospitalised.
Abeer told police that he pushed his wife following a quarrel in the afternoon and she hit the wall. Later, she committed suicide by hanging herself with a scarf from the window grill.
Dhaka Medical College authorities formed a three-member committee to conduct an autopsy.
Meanwhile on Monday, the wife of a deputy director of Anti-Corruption Commission died in a mysterious fire at their Shantibagh residence.
Salma, 32, wife of ACC official Khandaker Mesbauddin, succumbed to severe burn injuries at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
Mystery shrouds the death as Mesbauddin admitted Salma to DMCH in a critical condition and left the hospital and did not visit her again.
Salma's sister Bilkis Hossain told The Daily Star that they suspect Mesbauddin killed Salma. She also alleged that Mesbauddin hospitalised Salma hiding his identity.
Motijheel police said they were investigating the incident.
In another incident, police recovered the decomposed body of a private car driver from the city's Rampura area Monday night.
Deceased Kabir Hossain, 33, driver of a businessman in Banasri area of Rampura, lived in a rented house in the area.
On September 19, he went out of his house after his duty and did not return, police said.
Rampura police suspect that Kabir might have been killed following previous enmity.
His body was recovered around 10:00pm from the water-filled elevator shaft of an under-construction building.
Police also recovered the body of an alleged mugger beaten to death by a mob at Ibrahimpur under Kafrul Police Station.
Nur-un-Nabi, 25, of Mirpur Section-14, was killed in the early hours of Monday.
Officer-in-Charge of Kafrul Police Station Delwar Hossain said Nabi was killed after he mugged a pedestrian in the area.
In another incident, police recovered the body of a 50-year-old woman from a house at Tongi on Tuesday and arrested two persons, including the house owner, in connection with her death.
Tongi police said they recovered the body of Zubeda Khatun from the house of Sirajul Islam early Tuesday and arrested Sirajul and another tenant.
Police said the woman might have been killed in a planned way.
