Diplomats and traffic
This is a reply to Mr. Sikander Ahmed (DS September 13, 2009) where he sides with a diplomat's wife based in Dhaka to protest against my original letter published on August 30th, 2009. The records will show that the words “most of the stretched out, 4-5 lakh gas-guzzling monstrosities that have flooded and blocked Dhaka's narrow pot-holed roads, streets and lanes belong to the diplomatic community and that the Bangladeshi tax-payers pay for their fuel” are Mr Ahmed's and not mine.
This is what I wrote: “However, something that disturbed me was the arrogance of western foreign workers. I noticed how they go about in their gas guzzling SUVs all paid for by international agencies (ultimately the Bangladeshi taxpayers) … I noticed a fair amount of belligerence on part of the diplomats .. the Indian High Commissioner with his sweet words has made himself so popular that Bangladesh has to provide him with a heavily armed motorcade whenever His Excellency graces the public roads. It was the same charade with the British High Commissioner. I have never known any diplomats to cause this much trouble to the flow of traffic anywhere in the world!” Readers should also bear in mind that the newspaper decided to take out critical portions of my letter making my observations seem unfounded when in fact I had provided them with ample evidence including a photograph - to support my comments. ( The letter was too long and we had to drop certain portionsLetters Page Editor).
On a separate note, Sikander Ahmed could not be further from the truth when he claims that he has never seen a Bangladeshi girl go to work in rickshaws or on foot. What about all the women who work in garments factories?
