TSP factory MD held over rape charge
Police arrested Managing Director of triple super phosphate (TSP) fertiliser factory Zahirul Haq from his residence in the city early yesterday on charge of raping a domestic help.
The car driver of the MD, Sirajul Islam who took the girl to the MD's house for work as domestic help, was also detained in this connection.
They were later produced before a court that sent both of them to jail. The court rejected a petition seeking to remand driver Sirajul Islam and asked police to quiz him at the jail gate.
The MD and his factory's general manager, however, described the accusation of rape as a conspiracy by some disgruntled and corrupt officials of the factory.
Acting on a complaint, police raided Agrabad Bepari Para government Bungalow of MD Zahirul Haq around 4:30am and arrested him and his driver. Police also rescued the domestic help aged around 15 years from the residence.
The girl filed a case with Double Mooring police station yesterday morning, accusing Zahirul and his car driver.
The girl alleged that Zahirul raped her four times in last six days after she took the job at his residence on August 23.
In primary interrogation, MD Zahirul claimed to have fallen victim to a conspiracy by some of the transferred corrupt officials and local hoodlums who had been demanding toll from him, said Nirmalendu Bikash, assistant commissioner (Double Mooring Zone) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police.
The girl was sent to forensic department of Chittagong Medical College Hospital for medical test, he said.
When contacted, TSP General Manager (Admin) Saqee Hossain termed the incident a conspiracy against the MD.
“The MD transferred five to seven officials for indulging in irregularities and corruption at the beginning of 2008 during the tenure of caretaker government. They might be conspiring,” he said.
“The MD's initiative to evict illegal slums surrounding his bungalow at Bepari Para last year also might be a reason behind the conspiracy,” he added.
