Dhaka wants more senior level positions
Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations Ismat Jahan called upon the United Nations to appoint Bangladeshis in more senior level positions in UN peacekeeping.
Ismat said this while attending a meeting of Special Political and Decolonisation Committee of the United Nations on Thursday, according to a message received here.
She also called upon the UN Secretariat to ensure proper representation of the troop contributing countries in Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) and in the field missions taking into account their contribution to UN peacekeeping.
In this context, she said Bangladesh, which is one of the top troop contributing countries, having provided at least 10 percent of peacekeepers over the last 12 years was grossly underrepresented at the DPKO, particularly at senior-level.
“It was Bangladesh's expectation that the UN would address the issue with utmost seriousness by appointing more Bangladeshis both at the DPKO Headquarter in New York and in field operations,” she said.
Referring to Bangladesh's long association with the UN peacekeeping operations, Jahan mentioned that so far, Bangladesh has sent over 70,000 troops in 37 UN peacekeeping missions worldwide.
Currently, Bangladesh has around 10,000 peacekeepers deployed in 12 missions worldwide, she said.
She added that since 1988, as many as 81 Bangladeshi peacekeepers have died in the line of duty and this has, however, "not dented" Bangladesh's resolve to serve in more peacekeeping missions under the aegis of UN.
