Mushy unhappy with selection
Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim said that he was 'shocked' at the fact that the BCB's selection committee had not consulted him before announcing the Asia Cup 2014 squad and also expressed his displeasure over 'constant changes' to the team.
Mushfiqur made the comments at a city hotel during the pre-tournament press conference. Asked if he was happy with the tournament's squad, he said, "It's difficult to say, because no matter what team is given to me I have to play with that. Sometimes selectors consult before picking the team. One thing I am not happy about is that I was not consulted with regarding the Asia Cup squad and from that aspect I am shocked.
"I did not know anything till the last moment. I think the captain should be given that amount of respect. Whether my opinion is listened to or not, I was at least expecting a call," he added.
Mushfiqur, whose side underwent defeats in all the three formats of the game against Sri Lanka, believed that constant changes would only further demoralise the players. Citing an example the captain said that he was not happy with the fact that Mithun Ali was not given another chance after being included in the T20 squad against Sri Lanka.
"Every team goes through a crisis, but that's when it needs support. When too many changes are made to a side, the players then start to think on an individual basis and that's when you stop performing as a team.
"Yes the way we played the series was alarming, but there are certain players who I think should have gotten more chances to perform. If a player has it in the back of the mind that he might not be in the team, he won't be in his comfort zone," said Mushfiqur.
This is the second time in a week that the captain spoke of giving certain players more chances. Right after the second ODI the captain was asked regarding the team's decision to select an out-of-form Mahmudullah in the side instead of Naeem Islam, who was the Tigers' highest run-scorer against New Zealand.
Mushfiqur had then stated that the team was in need of an all-rounder and that, instead of being criticised, Mahmudullah needed support.
Admitting to the fact that the hosts had fielded a weakened team for the tournament, the captain was cautious regarding his expectation.
"The way we performed in the last series, it will be difficult to go to the finals. We have to start afresh. We have to be more focused on our own game rather than thinking about whom we are facing. Our first aim will be to beat Afghanistan and then move on from there," said Mushfiqur.
