Municipalities elections to begin in December: CEC

The Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda today said that elections to municipalities would be held in phases from December.

All the elections will be held using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), he said after a meeting at its office in the capital.

"We are considering to hold the elections in five phases…election would be completed by May next year," he added.

In the first phase, 20-25 municipalities, for which tenures would expire between January and the first week of February, will go to the polls, he said.

EC sources said that according to Local Government Division there are 329 municipalities in Bangladesh. The tenures for 235 of those will expire by March 2020. Tenure of another 56 will expire in April.
