Movement if licences not issued in 7 days
A section of truck drivers yesterday gave a seven-day ultimatum to the government for issuance of driving licences to the drivers enlisted by the Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation.
They also threatened to launch a movement, if the demand is not met within the timeframe.
Millat Hossain, who claimed to be the general secretary of Bangladesh Anta-Zila Truck Chalok Union, a unit of the federation, made the demand at a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity.
The workers' federation, highest body of road transport workers, in 2012 submitted a list of around 25,000 drivers of various vehicles to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to issue driving licences against them.
Meanwhile, BRTA in its drive against unfit vehicles and unlicensed drivers filed cases against at least 43 vehicles and fined Tk 38,000 in the capital yesterday.
