More 700 SIM cards seized in Joypurhat

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members of Joypurhat-5 unit seized more seven hundred SIM (subscriber identity module) cards from Ziapur village in Khetlal upazila under Joypurhat district on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday.
Most of the SIM cards were active with balance, members of the elite force said, adding that they have been trying to recover more SIM cards from Ziapur village as they learnt the people taken away a large number of SIM cards.
On Tuesday, Khetlal OC Iqbal Anwarul Haque told this correspondent that they recovered 243 SIM cards and all were inactive.
The SIM cards belong to Banglalink, Robi, Teletalk, Airtlel and Grameenphone.
"Criminals might have thrown the SIM cards into the pond with a special motive. If they wanted to destroy the SIM cards it could have been burnt," said Md Abdur Rahman, a resident of Ziapur village in Ketlal upazila.
He also alleged that police is not serious about the incident.     
On Tuesday, seven-year-old Rizvi, son of Abu Musa of Ziapur village, first noticed the SIM cards when he went to the pond to collect leafy vegetables. Without collecting the leafy vegetable, he returned home with around 60 SIM cards.
Hundreds of villagers thronged the pond to collect the SIM cards.
Md Masud Rana of the area said villagers collected around 5,000 SIM cards from the pond since Tuesday morning.
Contacted, ASP Md Abdur Rahim, commanding officer of Joypurhat-5, told this correspondent over phone that they are trying to recover more SIM cards from the area.
"After recovering a satisfactory number of SIM cards we will seek help of mobile operators to detect the details of each SIM cards including identities, nature of use and the towers under which the SIM cards were used," he added.
