Mob beats up Rab men, sources in Meherpur

Three Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) personnel, and three sources of the elite forces were injured in a mob beating at Rajnagar village in Sadar upazila of Meherpur district on Tuesday night.
The angry mob also torched three motorbikes of the Rab-6 men, snatched their firearms and confined them to a house for about an hour.
Police said, a team in plainclothes, led by DAD Zakir Hossain, along with their sources in a drive arrested Sheregul Islam, an alleged drug peddler, at the village around 7:30pm and assaulted him during primary interrogation.
Hearing the hue and cry, the villagers encircled them and gave the six a good beating, branding them as robbers.
The injured are Rab DAD Zaikir Hossain, ASI Shariful Islam, constable Azizul Lavlu and sources Sunnat Ali, Biplob Hossain and Minarul Hossain.
On information, additional Rab and some BGB men rushed to the spot and rescued the victims. They also opened fire to disperse the angry villagers.
The law enforcers later recovered the firearms after three hours of frantic search, said Reazul Islam, officer in-charge of Meherpur Sadar police station.
None was arrested till filing of this report yesterday noon.
