Mathews expects 'rock-hard' wicket
Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews expects his side to carry on the momentum from their previous series, against Pakistan, into the first Test against Bangladesh today.
Speaking to reporters at Mirpur yesterday, the captain expressed his desire to make a good start to the series by winning the first game.
“I thought we played some really good cricket in the UAE, except for the last two sessions of the last Test match (which saw Pakistan chase down 302 on the final day and draw the series). All the guys are in good nick and I hope we can continue the same way,” said Mathews.
“We all know that a good start can keep you going, so the start is very important. The first Test will be crucial,” he added.
Having had a look at the wicket at Mirpur yesterday morning, the captain predicts the pitch to be a 'belter'.
“The wicket looks rock-hard, it looks really good for batting. But we can't predict it perfectly right. Generally the wicket here has been slow and good for batting. We will try to get a combination accordingly,” he said.
The Lankans are likely to go with the same line-up that drew the Test series against Pakistan. Young openers, Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva are expected to lead the top order. They will be followed by a solid middle order which includes, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews.
It's their bowling that might see a few changes. Pacers Suranga Lakmal and Shaminda Eranga played all the three Tests against Pakistan and the Lankans are likely continue with them. Slow left-armer, Rangana Herath will be leading their attack. The visitors also have the option of going in with the extra spinner, and bring in Ajantha Mendis, or play three pacers by bringing in Dilruwan Perera.
