Man rescued from DU dorm 13 hrs after abduction
Police today rescued a mobile recharge shop owner from Dhaka University's Jagannath Hall, 13 hours after he was abducted by a group of people allegedly led by deputy sports secretary of BCL central committee.
The victim was identified as Farhad Islam, 25, owner of Farhad Telecom at Fakirerpool in the capital. He hailed from Chandpur.
Police detained seven persons including Srijon Gosh Sajeeb, deputy sports secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League and also a student of DU.
The other detainees are Jagannath Hall unit BCL activist Anupom Chandra, Arfan Patwari, Himel, Tanvirul Islam, Mamun and Bappi, said the officer-in charge of Ramna Police Station.
Farhad said his local friend Arfan along with 10 to 15 youths including some DU students caught him in Shahbagh area around 9:00pm Thursday and forcibly took him to Jagannath Hall.
The abductees later kept him confined to a room at the South Building of the dormitory for rest of the night and demanded Tk 5 lakh from his family over phone.
Farhad said six months back, Arfan lend one Akhter who resides in Rampura, Tk 5 lakh to start a business. Farhad was the guarantor. He also introduced Arfan with Akhter, he admitted.
As Akhter did not pay back the monthly installment of Tk 20,000 regularly, Arfan had been asking him to pay the money for last three months.
Following the phone call for money, Farhad's family lodged a general diary with Shahbagh Police Station.
Around 12:00pm today, as his family members went to Central Shaheed Minar area to give the money, police nabbed Arfan.
Later, police rescued Farhad from the hall in the afternoon following Arfan’s information.
During confinement, Farhad was beaten up with iron rods. The abductors also pressed burnt cigarettes on his hands, Farhad alleged.
A case accusing Arfan has been filed in this connection.
