Mahila Parishad for immediate DCC polls

Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) yesterday urged the authorities concerned to hold the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) polls immediately.
Having elected representatives in DCC will not only strengthen local governance but also encourage women's leadership as 30 of 92 seats of ward commissioners are reserved for women, said BMP leaders.
They were addressing a views exchange meeting on strengthening local government in the capital's Cirdap auditorium.
As the tenure of elected DCC representatives expired seven years ago, city dwellers are suffering from a lack of basic civic amenities, said BMP Chairperson Ayesha Khanam.
The election is being delayed due to a lack of political commitment
towards strengthening local governance, she added.
Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Sheikh Yusuf Harun, BMP Movement Secretary Lila Khaleda, among others, spoke on the occasion.
