Lipstick – An Incarnation of Satan!
Girls, if you can't imagine getting out of the house without applying a tinge of colour on your lips, you'd be horrified to know that at one point in history lipstick was actually banned! In Medieval Europe lipstick was banned many times by the church, as they proclaimed it to be 'reserved' for prostitutes, and was an 'incarnation of Satan.' The funny thing is painting lips was fashionable much before Hollywood came into existence. Cleopatra used to make her slaves grind carmine beetles and ants to get a rouge colour on her lips. Queen Elizabeth made intense red lips and bright white faces a fashion statement in the 16th century but Queen Victoria banned the painting of lips, claiming it to be immoral. The worst was when the British Parliament passed a law banning lipstick in 1770, stating that “women found guilty of seducing men into matrimony by a cosmetic means could be tried for witchcraft.” Thankfully, we've come a long way since then. At least now we have the freedom to deck ourselves for the sake of mankind!
