Save Kuakata beach from erosion
The Daily Star published a news report titled “Kuakata Beach: Thanks to red tape, WDB work uncertain” on June 27. Kuakata is a major tourist attraction in the country known for its panoramic sea beach. One can have an unobstructed view of both sunrise and sunset over the Bay of Bengal from the beach.
Therefore, when it is being reported that coastal erosion has seriously damaged part of the dyke along the beach, it does not bode well for the local tourism industry. According to the report, approval of a project to save the beach from erosion has been delayed as the planning ministry returned the proposal for a fresh feasibility study.
We are aware of the fact that government projects are often stuck in excessive and inefficient bureaucracy. But we urge the government to intervene in urgent matters like this. Otherwise, the damage that would occur because of the delay may be irreversible.
