Safeguarding migrants' welfare
The Daily Star published on April 21 an editorial titled “UAE open to migrant workers again.” This timely editorial needs the attention of authorities concerned. The opening of UAE for our migrant workers is indeed good news. Now the government should clamp down on the brokers and middlemen who extract a huge amount of money from labourers.
The government should also negotiate on their behalf to ensure that these migrants receive proper wages, food, accommodation, transport and assistance in their workplaces. Past records show that our labourers—especially women—were harassed, tortured, assaulted and exploited. The authorities should also make our embassy more available for our migrant workers.
