Preventing deaths on the road
Just after news surfaced that an NSU student travelling by bus was left for dead by the operators, we came to know about another shocking road accident that killed two school students. The reckless behaviour of bus drivers has reached an alarming level which needs to be reined in immediately. According to a report by The Daily Star on July 2, at least 2,471 people were killed on roads this year. According to the Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh, at least 7,397 people were killed and 16,193 others injured last year. Among the injured, 1,722 were maimed for life.
Road accidents are spreading like an endemic. The government should address it as a high priority.
