Most cases of violence against women filed in Dhaka in the last five years have not ended up with a conviction. This is concernerning especially because the main issue, as cited in media reports, has been negligence on the part of the police, investigating officers and public prosecutors.
Some famlies of victims claimed that the investigating officers had hurriedly filed the charge-sheets without recommending that anyone be punished before the court after having taken bribes from defendants. Public prosecutors, on their part, do not pursue these cases seriously enough, nor with any real vigour.
These issues must be resolved. It is a shame that victims of serious crimes are not getting the justice that is due to them.
