Development in Bangladesh from a Malaysian viewpoint
I'm a Malaysian and have written about my views on aid dependency of Bangladesh and how it is a mythical tool to 'help' the country develop economically, while actually crippling it. Over the last three years, I lived in Gulshan-2, Dhaka. During this time, on many occasions, I had the discomfort of dining and interacting with the expatriate community. Initially I felt sorry for them as, in my opinion, most are third-grade personalities in their respective countries and come to Bangladesh as development workers or business persons to make money in the name of alleviating poverty or to take advantage of low wages. Then we have many corrupt international development, aid and technical assistance group of 'experts', who design development aid projects from their comforts of the Westin Dhaka, which only create more poverty in the short, medium and long-term. It seems to me most have a personal agenda. The agenda is - the longer they can show 'evidence' of poverty in Bangladesh, the longer they get their tax free salaries, four-wheel drives, apartments in Gulshan or Bharidara, holidays to recovery from their 'hardship', children's education in international schools or abroad, medical insurance and many other allowances paid for. It is all a scam.
