Both the ruling and opposition backed lawyers today decided not to hold any rally and bring out any procession on the Supreme Court premises to avert any untoward incident and protect its sanctity.
They came up with the decision at a meeting with Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain at his SC office in the afternoon.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, former attorney general AF Hasan Ariff, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President AJ Mohammad Ali, its former presidents Abdul Baset Majumder, Habibul Islam Bhuiyan and AFM Mesbahuddin, senior lawyers Yusuf Hossain Humayun and Anisul Huq, SCBA’s acting secretary ABM Rafiqul Haque Talukder Raja, its former secretaries Bashir Ahmed, AM Aminuddin, SM Rezaul Karim and Badruddoza Badal attended at the meeting.
The chief justice expressed concern over the incidents of outsiders' entering the SC premises and attacking the pro-BNP lawyers on December 29, when the latter were staging demonstrations at the SC’s main gate in support of the "March for Democracy' called by the BNP-led alliance.
After the meeting, Mahbubey Alam told The Daily Star that the chief justice had invited them to meet him to draw their attention about the incidents and sought suggestion from lawyers to dissolve the crisis.
He said all the lawyers opined that the incidents of outsiders’ entering the SC premises and attacking the lawyers are very unexpected and unwarranted.
The lawyers told the chief justice that they will hold meetings and bring out processions at the SCBA premises or its auditorium, he said, adding that they can hold meetings outside the court premises.
