Workshop on Mooting Organised by DUMCS at University of Dhaka
Dhaka University Moot Court Society (DUMCS), the pioneering mooting institution of the country, organised a two-day long workshop on mooting titled ‘A Study in Mooting’ for the students of Department of Law, University of Dhaka on May 13 and 14, 2018. The extensive workshop covered various areas on mooting and featured a fact marshalling contest for the participants. Numerous renowned mooters of DUMCS who are currently serving in the academia and as lawyers and judges facilitated the sessions of the workshop.
The inauguration ceremony took place on May 13. Professor Dr. Md. Rahmat Ullah, Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Dhaka and President, DUMCS was the chief guest of the program. Professor Dr. Mohammad Nazmuzzaman Bhuian, Moderator, DUMCS along with Mr. Mohammad Golam Sarwar, Lecturer, Department of Law, University of Dhaka were also present at the ceremony.
Dr. Nazmuzzaman Bhuian urged the participants to learn diligently from the upcoming sessions and to implement the takeaways in various national and global level moot court competitions in near future. He also highlighted the past achievements of DUMCS and told the participants to keep up the legacy of the society in the upcoming days.
In his speech, Dr. Rahmat Ullah thanked the Executive and General Committee members of DUMCS as well as the teachers involved for keeping the society vibrant active. He also pointed out that mooting would definitely help today’s law students to become better legal professionals in future. He then declared the mooting workshop open and wished its success.
For the next two days, the participants got acquainted with the basics of mooting, fact marshalling, art of advocacy and presentation, argumentation, techniques of legal research, memorial writing etc. A plenary session also took place where former mooters of DUMCS shared their experiences of representing the society as well as the nation in global mooting competitions abroad. The sessions of the workshop were quite lively with frequent interactions taking place between the facilitators and the audience.
After the workshop, a fact marshalling contest was organised to test the learning outcomes of the participants. Based on the contest, the top three performers were awarded at the closing ceremony on May 14. Professor Dr. Md. Rahmat Ullah was present at the ceremony and gave away the prizes. He mentioned that the facilitators of the workshop are now prominent figures in the academia as well as in the Court. He encouraged the students to follow their footsteps and hone their advocacy skills by participating in various mooting competitions at home and abroad.
Professor Dr. Nazmuzzaman Bhuian also spoke at the closing ceremony and lauded Dr. Rahmat Ullah’s efforts for supporting the ventures of DUMCS wholeheartedly. He reiterated that the members of DUMCS would keep on assisting the new mooters in their journeys in every possible way.
DUMCS plans to host more such workshops for the students in near future. Moreover, the preparations are underway for hosting the 8th Inter Year Moot Court Competition 2018 at Department of Law, University of Dhaka.
