Women in innovation and creativity
World Intellectual Property Day for the first time was observed by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 with an aim of raising awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life and of celebrating creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe. 26 April was chosen as the date for World Intellectual Property Day because it coincides with the date on which the Convention Establishing the WIPO entered into force in 1970.
Every April 26, the WIPO celebrates World Intellectual Property Day to let people learn about the role that intellectual property rights (patents, trademarks, industrial designs, copyright) play in encouraging innovation and creativity. In furtherance thereof, on last April 26, World Intellectual Property Day was celebrated around the world.
Every day women come up with game-changing inventions and life-enhancing creations that have the ability to transform lives and advance human understanding from astrophysics to nanotechnology and from medicine to artificial intelligence and robotics. This year's World Intellectual Property Day campaign aimed at celebrating the brilliance, ingenuity, curiosity and courage of the women who are driving positive changes in our world.
This year's theme therefore was “Powering Change: Women in Innovation and Creativity” because the important and inspiring contributions of women around the globe are indeed powering change in our world in a meteoric speed and contributing towards shaping a common future for all of us. Their remarkable achievements and 'can do' attitude are an inspiration and invaluable legacy for young girls of today who have the aspirations to become the inventors and creators of tomorrow. The idea behind this theme was to encourage an increasing number of women and girls in creative and technological fields and to highlight how intellectual property can support their innovation.
This year's World Intellectual Property Day celebration was an opportunity to highlight how the intellectual property (IP) system can support innovative and creative women (and indeed everyone) in their quest to bring their amazing ideas to market.
