DU becomes the national champion at the 14th Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court Competition
The Dhaka University Moot Court Society (DUMCS) has once again won the championship title at the Bangladesh national rounds of the 14th Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court Competition 2023. This marks two consecutive years of unparalleled success for the institution. The winning team, consisting of Kazi Rakib Hossain, Rezwana Rashid Putul, and Rezwan Ahmed Refat, also bagged the Best Memorial Award. This achievement has given DUMCS the honour of representing Bangladesh at the Asia-Pacific rounds of the competition, set to take place in Hong Kong in 2024.
The International Committee of the Red Cross Bangladesh in collaboration with the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) hosted the Bangladesh National Rounds of the 14th Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court Competition. This event took place from 5 October- 7 October 2023. The topic for this year's Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court Competition centred on war crimes under the Rome Statute.
Thirty law schools from across the country, participated in the competition. While University of Dhaka emerged as the champion, East-West University became the runner-up. Mahir Chowdhury from Eastern University bagged the Best Mooter Award.
The grand finale of the competition was adjudicated by Honourable Justice Naima Haider, Judge, High Court Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh, Honourable Justice Khizir Ahmed Choudhury, Judge, High Court Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh, and Brig. Gen. (Rtd.) Mohammad Sajjad Siddique, Former Judge Advocate General, Bangladesh Army.
The competition was launched by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) with a primary objective: to foster the study and understanding of international humanitarian law among university students in the South Asian region, including Bangladesh. This competition serves as a platform for students to deepen their understanding of international humanitarian law, promoting awareness and building expertise with regard to this significant area of law within South Asia.
