National Justice Audit launching event held at BICC

On 29 July, at Bangabandhu International Convention Center, National Justice Audit Bangladesh Launching Event took place. Law and Justice Division of Ministry of Law, Justice and Partliamentary Affairs and Rule of Law Programme, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH jointly undertook the National Justice Audit aiming at diagnosing the problems and opportunities relating to the delivery of criminal justice system in the country. Justice Audit, which in fact is a policy tool, which allows policy makers to base their policies on evidence, analyses institutional data, practitioner survey data and data from the citizens’ perspective reflecting their aspirations concerning justice.

The welcome address in the event was given by ASSM Zahirul Haque, Secretary to the Law and Justice Division of Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs. Following the welcome address, Ms Paromita Sengupta, Head of Programme, Rule of Law, GIZ Bangladesh, gave a brief overview about the Rule of Law programme and background of National Justice Audit. A comprehensive presentation on National Justice Audit, diagnosing the criminal justice system, was given by Ms. Kathryn English, Co-director, Governance and Justice Group (GJG), UK and Mr. Joseph Eric Cadora, Director of Justice Mapping Center, USA. The presentation was followed by an interactive session where the presenters entertained the queries of the audience.

Ms. Jane Edmondson, Head of DFID Bangladesh, Mr. Michael Schultheiß, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dhaka, marked their presence in the event as the special guests. Honorable Chief Justice of Bangladesh, Mr. Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain was present as the Chief Guest while Honorable Law Minister, Mr. Anisul Huq, presided over the event. Key persons from relevant ministries, departments, institutions, NGOs and civil society organizations, including policy makers, lawyers, journalists, academics, attended the event.
