Legal notice served for non-compliance of quarantine for foreign returnees
A Supreme Court lawyer today served a legal notice to know whether the government implemented the 2020 High Court directives of a 14-day mandatory quarantine of all overseas returnees.
Lawyer Md Eunus Ali Akond sent the legal notice requesting the respondents to comply with the HC orders in 24 hours.
Health Minister Zahid Malek, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Md Mahbub Ali, Health Secretary Lokman Hosain, Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary Md Mokammel Hossain, Senior Secretary to Home Ministry Mostafa Kamal Uddin, and Director General of Directorate General of Health Services Abul Bashar Mohammad Khurshid Alam, were made respondents to the notice.
Contempt of court petition will be filed against them if they fail to comply with the directives in 24 hours, said Eunus.
Due to non-compliance with the HC directives, people of the country have been affected by the first and second waves of Covid-19, and non-compliance with the HC orders is tantamount to contempt of court, the lawyer said in the legal notice.
Following a writ petition, the HC on March 19, 2020, directed the civil aviation and tourism ministry to hand over all overseas returnees to law enforcement agencies -- to keep them in quarantine for up to 14 days upon their arrival, to prevent the spread of Covid-19 infection.
