Land dispute kills two in 2 districts

Two people were killed and four others injured over land disputes in Jamalpur and Barisal districts yesterday and on Monday night.

Our Jamalpur Correspondent reports: a man was killed allegedly by his elder brothers over land dispute at Gouripur village in Sadar upazila early yesterday.

The deceased is Wares Ali, 42, son of Shamsul Haque of the village.

Police quoted locals as saying that there had been a long-standing dispute between Wares and his two brothers-- Wazed Ali and Hazrat Ali-- over the ownership of their paternal property.

As a sequel of their enmity, Wares locked in an altercation with his two brothers around 12:30am. At one stage, Wazed and Hazrat beat up Wares mercilessly with bamboo sticks, leaving him critically injured and left the scene.

Critically injured Wares was rushed to Jamalpur General Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Away in Barisal, an elderly man was stabbed to death and his two sons were injured allegedly by their rivals over a disputed land in Nandanpara village in Gournadi upazila on Monday night.

The deceased is Khadem Sardar, 56, of the village.

Gournadi police, quoting family members, said there had been a long standing dispute between Khadem and his two neighbours-- Nannu member and Sentu Mridha- over the ownership of a piece of land.

Khadem's family member removed a demarcation pillar at the disputed land on Monday morning.

Being angered by the act, Nannu and Sentu's followers stabbed Khadem and his two sons with sharp weapons around 9:00pm.

Khadem died on his way to Gournadi Upazila Health Complex, police said.
