The High Court today declared illegal a trial court's placing on remand Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, an adviser to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, in a bomb explosion case.

The HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed passed the order after hearing a petition that challenged the legality of the remand order.

The ground on which the HC came up with the verdict could not be known immediately as its full text was not available till filing of this report this afternoon.

On January 8, Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Haque placed Hossain, also the vice chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council, on a two-day remand for interrogation in a case filed for blasting crude bombs in front of the office of deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Ramna zone).

The next day, another HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Mohammad Ullah stayed the remand order and issued a rule upon the government to explain why the remand order should not be declared illegal.

Detectives picked up Hossain on January 7 when he came out of the Jatiya Press Club in the capital after a programme where he denounced the January 5 election.
