Jubo League leader killed over extortion

Locals hacked a Jubo League leader to death and injured a Swechchhasebok League leader at Choklokman in Bogra district town on Thursday night when they were allegedly extorting money from a family.

The dead, Golam Hafiz Likhon, 40, was vice-president of Bogra town unit Jubo League. The injured is Swechchhsebok League district unit member Ataur Rahman Milu, 35, also brother-in-law of Likhon.

Locals alleged that Likhon and Ataur used to run criminal activities in the area and they were extorting money from locals ahead of Eid.

On Thursday noon, locals lodged a complaint against Likhon and Ataur to the office of Bogra superintendent of police in this connection.   Locals caught Likhon and Ataur when they went to a house to extort money from its members around 9:30pm. They then stabbed the two indiscriminately, leaving Likhon dead and injuring Ataur critically.

Ataur is now undergoing treatment at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital.

Police said locals also vandalised Ataur's house and torched motorcycles of the duo.

However, Likhon's wife Hasina Hafiz Hira denied the allegations against her husband.

Gaziur Rahman, assistant superintendent (Sadar and Media) of police in Bogra, said they received a complaint against Likhon and Ataur about extorting money from locals and running criminal activities on Thursday noon.

Shahjahanpur Police Station was assigned to investigate the incident, but the killing happened before police could do anything, he said.

Police detained at least 10 people for interrogation in connection with the killing, the police official added.
