JU students block highway
Several hundred students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway near the varsity campus in Savar and vandalised several buses protesting assault of a teacher and students in Gabtoli.
The students took to the streets around 4:45pm and vandalised at least five buses near the main entrance of the university.
Half an hour later, the protesters blocked the highway, halting transport movement on the busy road, reports our JU correspondent.
The trouble began when a bus of Village Line Paribahan hit a Dhaka-bound JU shuttle carrying students and teachers of the university at Gabtali bus terminal around 4:30pm, JU students alleged.
The students had heated debate with transport workers there.
At one stage, a number of the workers gathered there and assaulted some JU students and a teacher.
The attackers also snatched away several mobile phone sets, laptops and other valuables from the students, students alleged.
The students vowed to continue the blockade until the owner of the Village Line Paribahan makes an apology before the university authorities.
JU Proctor Tapan Kumar Shah told The Daily Star that they were talking to the high-ups at the communications ministry to resolve the issue immediately.
