Journalist, family members attacked in Lalmonirhat
A journalist and his family members were injured in an attack carried out by some local criminals in Lalmonirhat Sadar last night.
Badiar Rahman (50) is Lalmonirhat district correspondent of local Bangla daily Dainik Manab Barta.
He was taken to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital but was later transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital as he was in critical condition.
Badiar and his family came under the attack in front of their house at Taluk Khitamara Banvasa intersection in the town around 8:00pm last night, our local correspondent reports.
According to the victims, some eight to ten local criminals first attacked and beat Badiar's younger brother Saiful Islam and son Sohanur Rahman Shishir in front of their house.
When Badiar tried to protect them from the criminals, they started beating him and hit him with a sharp weapon, leaving him critically injured.
Badiar's wife Sheuli Begum (44) also was injured when she rushed there to rescue her family members from the attack, they said.
The criminals also entered their house, vandalised some furniture and fled the scene after giving them death threats.
Later, locals rescued them and took them to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital.
Saiful lodged a written complaint with Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station in this connection last night. In the complaint, he said that the culprits snatched away Tk 4 lakh from him.
However, it is not yet clear why the culprits attacked them, police said.
Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station Mahfuz Alam said, "We have received the complaint and after an investigation, legal action will be taken against the culprits."
