Japan to give $1.18billion to Bangladesh
Japan will provide $1.18 billion as Official Development Assistance (ODA) this year which will be spent in five projects, including the coal-fired power plant in Matarbari Island of Maheshkhali.
Deputy Director General for Press and Public Diplomacy of Japan Koichi Mizushima made the announcement today while briefing the media on the outcome of Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida’s talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart AH Mahmood Ali.
Mizushima did not specify the four other projects but said that more Japanese investors would come for investment in Bangladesh in the coming days.
“The number of Japanese companies in Bangladesh is on the rise ---from 61 in 2006 to 176 in 2013,” he told reporters at the Sonargaon Hotel. He said the climate for investment was improving and hoped that the government would take steps to improve the atmosphere further.
He found a suitable timing for strengthening bilateral relationship after a new government was formed through the January general election.
Apart from fostering further the bilateral relations, Mizushima said Japan wanted for constructing comprehensive partnership in different international forum.
Kishida, who is leading a 20-member delegation, arrived in Dhaka on Friday on a two-day visit to promote bilateral cooperation between the two countries. He is the first foreign minister visiting Dhaka after the January 5 parliamentary election.
