It's party time!
They couldn't wait till the morning. They started stuffing the ballot box when it was still dark and sealed over 800 ballots by 8:30am.
And this is the story of Purba Nalua Government Primary School polling centre in Comilla's Barura, one of the 91 upazilas that went to polls yesterday.
Wondering how this was possible? The presiding officer gives you a firsthand account.
"Some people stormed the polling centre twice in between 2:00am and 3:00am. They took away the keys of the almirah by holding me hostage,” Presiding Officer Fakhruddin said.
“Then they took the ballot papers out of the almirah and started stamping on pineapple [symbol of AL-backed chairman candidate]."
In an emotion-choked voice, he said, "I'm no stranger to election duties. But I have never been through such a nightmare."
Fakhruddin was not the only presiding officer to have a bad day.
On a visit to Bagmara Poura Government Primary School polling station around 9:30am, journalists met Presiding Officer Gopal Krishna Chakrabarty.
He said supporters of AL-backed candidate Mostafizur Rahman Bhuiyan snatched around 1,200 ballot papers between 1:30am and 2:00am. "I don't know where all those have gone."
Voting in the two centres was suspended.
Also from Adampur Government Primary School and Khosbash High School centres, more than 3,000 ballot papers were taken away.
Returning Officer Rashedul Islam said they received many such allegations and they were looking into those.
In Jessore, supporters of the ruling party-backed candidates did not bother to fold the ballots one by one before dropping those in the boxes at Birampur Government Primary School centre.
They folded many ballot papers at a time and dumped those into the boxes. Journalists visiting the centre could see ballots unfurled in the transparent boxes.
By 8:30am, 1,000 votes out of 3,264 were cast at the centre, according to Presiding Officer Ziaur Rahman. It means around 33 votes a minute in half an hour after the polling began.
The ruling party men in Agailjhara upazila of Barisal appeared smarter. The upazila unit AL ordered marking 70 percent ballot papers in favour of the party-backed chairman candidate by 10:00am.
The “deadline” was met in almost all the 38 centres.
"By 10:00am, we have completed marking 70 percent ballot papers,” proudly said an AL worker of Ratnapur union. "I alone have stamped on more than 200 ballots.”
He, however, lamented that he could not cast his own vote.
Abul Hossain, presiding officer for Gaila High School centre, told The Daily Star around 11:30am that over 3,100 (69 percent) votes out of 4,579 were cast by then. There was no voter at the centre at that time.
In Dharmapasha upazila of Sunamganj, local ruling party lawmaker Moazzem Hossain Ratan led AL men to oust the agents of the BNP-backed candidate and an AL rebel candidate from Selbarash Government Primary School centre. They stamped on several hundred ballot papers in favour of their chairman candidate.
As aggrieved voters laid siege to the centre, the lawmaker left under police protection.
While these anomalies were taking place centring the fourth phase of ongoing upazila polls, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad was in the US.
He sent an email on Saturday, urging the administration to ensure free and fair polls.
But the atmosphere was not congenial to free and fair voting even in his upazila, Jibannagar of Chuadanga. Capturing of polling centres, snatching of ballot papers and false voting took place in at least five polling stations there. Election officials had to postpone voting at one station.
What happened in Fulgazi upazila in Feni is also interesting.
A reporter of The Daily Star saw that BNP-backed candidate Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury's supporters captured Feni Fulgazi Govt Degree College centre around 9:00am. They entered several booths, snatched ballot papers and ballot boxes. As the law enforcers reached the spot, they fled.
Then came the agents and supporters of AL-blessed candidate Ekramul Haque. All in a jovial mood, they started ballot-stuffing.
They snatched ballot books from the polling officials and stamped on cup-plate, the symbol of AL-backed candidate. They filled several ballot boxes.
In Kutubdia upazila of Cox's Bazar, the AL men threw their weight behind the Jatiya Party-backed candidate. Interestingly, the AL did not support any of its party candidates in this upazila.
They teamed up with JP activists to capture polling centres, snatch ballot papers and detain and beat polling officials.
With the help of law enforcers, they captured eight polling centres at Uttar Dhuraong, Dakkhin Dhurang and Lemshikhali union between 8:30am and 12:00noon.
In Satkhira, stick-wielding followers of the AL-backed candidate in Kolaroa upazila were seen guarding the entrance of Raghunathpur Government Primary School centre to prevent rivals from voting.
As photojournalists tried to take photos, they attempted to snatch the cameras.
Similar incidents were reported from some more upazilas including Begumganj in Noakhali, Pirojpur Sadar, Terokhada in Khulna, Dharmapasha in Sunamganj, and Patuakhali Sadar.
