The apex court did not deliver justice to Jamaat-e-Islami leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman by handing him death on war crimes charges, his family alleged.

“My father is innocent, but he was awarded the capital punishment,” said Hasan Iqbal, elder son of Kamaruzzaman, after the verdict was pronounced today. “We will seek review.”

“My father had no involvement in the mass killing for which he received the death penalty,” he claimed. “Also, the history has no record of his involvement.”

Iqbal was speaking to reporters near the Supreme Court Bar Association premises after the Appellate Division upheld the death penalty for Kamaruzzaman in one charge and commuted the capital punishment to life term imprisonment in another.

However, he denied comment on whether the family will seek the presidential clemency to save Kamaruzzaman from the gallows.
