Indo-Pak classic today
The most passionate of rivalries will kick off the Super 10 stage of the ICC World Twenty20 today at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. India will take on archrivals Pakistan in the Group 2 game at 7:30pm today.
As the two captains hinted in their respective press conferences yesterday, the intensity of the rivalry has died down a bit in recent times, but that is not obvious as far as the supporters of each country are concerned. For many Pakistan fans beating India will be as good as winning the World Cup, and with the huge interest the bout creates among neutrals, it will make for an electric atmosphere in Mirpur tonight.
The two sides are pretty evenly balanced. India have one of the strongest batting line-ups in the world with the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh. Pakistan on the other hand have one of the better bowling attacks in the tournament – Umar Gul is a reverse swing specialist while Saeed Ajmal is one of the most destructive T20 bowlers. They also have the X-factor in Shahid Afridi, who can turn the match within a blink of an eye with either bat or ball.
Coming into the match, both can claim to have the upper hand. India have never lost a match to Pakistan in World Cups while Pakistan have won their most recent match, the Afridi-induced thriller in the Asia Cup. The stage is therefore set for a an India-Pakistan classic, and the victor will have bragging rights as well as a head march in a very difficult group.
