Twelve states in India record highest Covid-19 cases
Thirty municipal areas spread over 12 states are accounting for almost 80 percent of India's Covid-19 cases, according to the health ministry.
These 30 municipal areas are in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Odisha.
The data emerged during a meeting Indian Health Secretary Preeti Sudan had with senior officers of the ministry and municipal commissioners, district magistrates and other officials from the 30 municipal areas, the health ministry on Saturday.
The total number of Covid-19 cases across India touched 90,927 today, including 2,872 deaths, recording the biggest single-day jump of 4,987 new patients, the health ministry added.
Of the total deaths linked to coronavirus, 120 patients died in the last 24 hours while more than 34,000 patients have been cured so far as the recovery rate stood at 37.51 percent this morning.
Four states -- Maharashtra, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat -- which recorded the highest number of cases in India, also reported the biggest spike in Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours.
Maharashtra has reported nearly a third of India's total cases. The coronavirus cases in the state crossed the 30,000-mark on Saturday as it reported 1,606 new cases in a single day. With a jump of 884 cases, Mumbai's total reached 18,555.
Tamil Nadu's tally has crossed the 10,000-mark as the southern state recorded 400 new cases in a single day and Delhi crossed the 9,000-mark in the number of cases. On Saturday, the city reported 438 new cases and 129 people have died so far.
In Gujarat, the state with the second-highest number of coronavirus cases, 340 new Covid-19 patients were reported on Saturday.
