Implement safe food law in 60 days
The High Court today directed the government to enforce a law on safe food through issuing a gazette notification in next two months to ensure public safety and health.
The government has to make the law effective after finalising the draft of the Safe Food Act, 2013, the court said.
The High Court bench of Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Muhammad Khushid Alam Sarker passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Legal Action Bangladesh Foundation.
The organisation submitted the petition on May 21 seeking its directives on the government to make the law effective through issuing a gazette notification.
The High Court on May 26 directed the food secretary to submit a report on the progress about making the proposed law effective.
The food secretary today submitted a report to the High Court through Deputy Attorney General Al Amin Sarker saying that the government has prepared a draft on the safe food act rule for enforcing the law.
After examining the report, the court gave two months to government for making the law effective through issuing a gazette notification.
