How much a teenage girl can take?
A 16-year-old girl in Shyamnagar of Satkhira has tried to commit suicide after the video of her gang rape was circulated in her village.
The clip was also posted online and shared by the rapists as an act of vengeance because the girl had refused to meet one of them following the rape.
The victim's family is now hiding in fear and shame. Her parents are trying to get her married as soon as possible, reports our correspondent.
Police could only nab one of the seven culprits.
On April 26, the ninth-grader was walking back to her house following a visit to her sister's when a local youth named Rezaul Karim Dhali snatched her mobile phone and ran into a nearby school.
Following him inside, the girl got surrounded by seven youths, including Rezaul. They dragged her into an empty classroom and gang-raped her.
The rapists shot the orgy on their mobile phones and said they would spread the video among the villagers if she opened her mouth.
“However, I talked about this with my sister and my brother-in-law,” the victim said.
Her brother-in-law started to get phone threats. “They also stopped him in the street one day and reiterated their threats. They have been calling him repeatedly,” she added.
Several days later, Rezaul got in touch with her and asked her to meet him. The girl refused -- only to see their threats being executed.
On the morning of May 5, she locked herself inside her room and tied her scarf to the ceiling. Her family members broke in right before she could get the noose around her neck.
Her brother-in-law filed a case with Shyamnagar Police Station the very day. In the case, he named Rezaul, Raju Ahmed Gazi, Rubel Hossain, Sabuj Hossain Gazi, Sumon Ahmed, Monir Hossain and Bappi Debnath. Bappi was arrested on May 5.
Even then, her brother-in-law kept getting phone calls threatening him to withdraw the case or see his on fire. For the past two days, his cell phone has been turned off.
“The six others are on the run. They have fled across the border to India,” claimed Mohammad Sagir Miah, officer-in-charge of the police station.
According to locals, two of the alleged rapists, Rubel, 20, and Raju, 20, are nephews of influential Awami League leaders.
The OC had raided Rubel's house and seized the T-shirt he was seen wearing in the video while raping the girl. “Even if his family is well-connected with AL, he is a rapist and will not go unpunished,” added Sagir.
