Hollywood star pledges donations for Sundarbans oil spill recovery
Hollywood star and founder of Water Defense Mark Ruffalo in a video pledged for donations to aid in the recovery of the Sundarbans from a massive oil spillage that took place recently.
Ruffalo shared the video in his Facebook page urging everyone to join hands in the water monitoring and oil clean-up efforts taking place in the world’s largest mangrove forest by Water Defense.
Water Defense, founded in 2012, is a US-based non-profit organisation that works to protect water.
They have engaged a group of Bangladeshis and global citizens who want to help protect the fragile Sundarbans ecosystem and the human communities living nearby following the oil spillage that took place on December 9 last year when an oil tanker capsized in the Shela River area of the Sundarbans, spilling 3.5 lakh litres of furnace oil over 60 km long area.
They are running a campaign titled “We Are There”, as part of which they are collecting donations to send a team to test the water column at various points throughout the affected Sundarbans.
They will be using advanced methods and extremely sensitive environmental indicators that detect and monitor the full gamut of contaminants over a period of time. As qualified third party testers, Water Defense will be able to provide independent analysis of the situation.
Water Defense will bring a large quantity of open-celled foam, (OPFLEX), which acts as synthetic eelgrass, to assist with the ongoing oil spill clean-up effort. Once on site in the affected area, their team will deploy OPFLEX materials in the water along the main anchoring lines and/or other structures (e.g. boats). The deployment will include mesh belt booms configured into long rolls for deployment with boats, and the synthetic eelgrass.
Ruffalo has been actively speaking to raise concerns regarding the Sundarbans oil spill issue from the very beginning in social media.
