HC resumes regular functions after 5 months

After five months, regular functions of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court resumed today on a limited scale while following health guidelines.

A total of 18 benches of the High Court conducted hearings and disposal of cases in presence of lawyers and court officials while maintaining physical distancing in order to contain the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The judges, lawyers and court staffers were seen using face masks and sanitisers in the court rooms, in line with the outlined health guidelines.

Physical distancing was seen maintained in part at the court premises and its offices.

Some lawyers expressed satisfaction as they could go to the Supreme Court premises.

"We are happy as we could come to the Supreme Court for moving cases after a long period of time. I hope that the litigants will fight for justice now," Advocate Masud Rana told The Daily Star today.

Both the Appellate and High Court Divisions of the SC went on a two-week annual vacation on March 13 this year. The courts were scheduled to reopen on March 28.

However, the chief justice on March 25 declared general holidays for all the courts across the country from March 26 in order to contain the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
