Services hampered as Khulna doctors on strike for 3rd day
Physicians in Khulna district are continuing their work abstention for the third consecutive day today demanding arrest of a police personnel along with his wife, who allegedly attacked one of their fellow doctors recently.
They also demanded withdrawal of a case filed against the physician, Dr Sheikh Nishat Abdullah, with Sonadanga Police Station by Assistant Sub-Inspector Naim.
Dr Baharul Alam, president of the Khulna unit of the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), said a high-level delegation of the Directorate General of Health Services reached Khulna today to discuss the issue, reports UNB.
"The delegation will hold a meeting with the BMA, clinic owners and physicians to address the issue," he said.
Khulna unit BMA is scheduled to hold a protest rally in front of Shaheed Sheikh Abu Naser Specialised Hospital tomorrow to press home their demand. It will also decide on a "stricter movement" in a general meeting tomorrow afternoon if their demands are not met.
The doctors' strike has caused immense public sufferings as physicians have halted services at all government and private hospitals in the district, except for emergency care.
"We have been serving patients in need of emergency treatment, surgeries and diagnosis. If we are barred from staging Saturday's demonstration, there may be a decision of stricter movement," Dr Saifullah Mansur, publicity and mass communication secretary of Khulna BMA said.
Visiting Khulna Medical College Hospital yesterday, patients, including children, were seen waiting for physicians in front of the outdoor department, reports our staff photographer from spot.
Yasin, a child from Khulna's Daulatpur upazila, came for treatment for his broken hand, but he had to go back without treatment.
On February 25, Sheikh Nishat Abdullah, head of Burn and Plastic Surgery Department of Shaheed Sheikh Abu Naser Specialised Hospital in Khulna, was physically assaulted, allegedly by a patient's relatives including ASI Naim, who is posted at Satkhira district police.
Naim also kept the doctor confined for three hours to a nursing home in the city's Sheikhpara when he was conducting an operation.
Protesting the attack, Bangladesh Medical Association, Khulna, has been observing the work abstention since Wednesday morning.
