Halt extra-judicial killings: NHRC
Against the backdrop of people’s death in Rab ‘shootout’, National Human Right Commission (NHRC) today called for stopping all sorts of extra-judicial killings immediately.
“No extra-judicial killing, whatever excuse is cited for, can continue in the country....It should be stopped immediately,” NHRC Chairman Prof Mizanur Rahman said.
He was speaking at a discussion marking the second anniversary of monthly magazine Manabadhikar Khabor at Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council’s auditorium in the capital.
Prof Mizan said when they took office in 2010, they protested the extra-judicial killing vehemently and it seemed that the extra-judicial killing had come down to “zero percent.”
“But recently, we are observing that one sort of fiction, in the name of ‘Banduk Judho’ [shootout] is being cooked up....Replacing the word crossfire, Banduk Judho is now being used,” he said.
He said versions about “every shootouts” remained “same”, just there were some changes in names of victims, places of occurrence, time and dates.
“We can’t let our head down before the world community for our human rights situation,” he added.
About the death of a Mirpur’s youth at police custody, the NHRC boss said they were investigating the death and will submit their findings with recommendations to the government soon.
