Greens urge all to save environment

Environmentalists and academicians yesterday urged the people to come forward to resist the interest groups involved in anti-environment activities.
They said there was no alternative to protecting the country's rivers, forests and other natural habitats for maintaining the environmental balance.
So, the government as well as the people must be more pro-active to ensure a safe environment through creating awareness countrywide, they told a seminar, "Environment Movement and Organisation: Bangladesh Perspective", in the capital's WVA auditorium.
The programme was organised by Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (Bapa) and Bangladesh Poribesh Network (BEN).
Speaking as chief guest, Prof Jamilur Reza Choudhury, vice chancellor of the University of Asia Pacific, urged the young generation to take part in the environment movement.
He laid importance on planned urbanisation without damaging farmlands.
He also expressed frustration for not implementing the Detailed Area Plan (DAP) of Dhaka and blamed some quarters for this.
Bishwo Shahitto Kendro founder Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed stressed the movement by the people to leave a safe environment for the sake of the nation.
Bapa Vice President Prof Nazrul Islam presented the keynote paper, while Bapa President ASM Shahjahan and Vice President Prof Bazlul Haque Khandker spoke among others.
