Govt will take action against wrongdoers
The government will take appropriate legal action against those involved in extrajudicial killings if evidence is found in this regard, said Law Minister Anisul Huq yesterday.
The law enforcers have been asked to enquire into the incidents of extrajudicial killings as it is a much-talked about topic and many reports on this are being published in the media, he said.
The minister said this while talking to reporters after a meeting with European Union Ambassador William Hanna, French Ambassador Michel Trinquier and Swedish Ambassador Anneli Lindahl Kenny at his Bangladesh Secretariat office.
“The government will not allow any incident of extrajudicial killing in the country,” Anisul Huq said.
He also said the government will not repeal the existing rule of death sentence as a punishment for those convicted of committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.
Earlier, the law minister told a meeting of lower court judges at Judicial Administration Training Institute that the government has taken measures, including appointing judges, to reduce the huge backlog of pending cases.
He said around 28 lakh cases are now pending with courts across the country.
He attended the meeting as chief guest on the occasion of a 15-day refresher training course for the joint district judges and equivalent judicial officials.
