Govt-private efforts can save economy from effects
Although Bangladesh has a resilient and growing economy despite occurrence of natural disasters, its progress will be thwarted by extreme climate change related disasters by 2030 unless mitigation efforts are made by the government as well as the private sector, said experts.
They were speaking at a workshop titled “Bangladesh -- Where Climate Threats and Action Meet” organised by Bangladesh Climate Change Resilience Fund (BCCRF) at Ruposhi Bangla Hotel in the capital yesterday.
Addressing the workshop, Dr Mohammed Nasiruddin, project director of BCCRF, said, “We need major investments in infrastructure, flood defence, and development of drought resistant crops to cope with global warming which will cause extreme river floods, more intense tropical cyclones, rising sea-level and very high temperatures.”
Citing the 2012 World Bank study “Turn Down the Heat: Why a 4°C warmer World Must be Avoided,” he said the world will likely experience a temperature rise of above 4°C within this century resulting in unprecedented heat waves, severe draught and flood hitting the developing nations hard.
Ministry of Environment and Forests Secretary Md Shafiqur Rahman Patwari, among others, spoke.
